d5 Grocery affordability pilot

FAACTS SF with the support of District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood proposes the D5 Grocery Affordability Pilot. The pilot will establish a Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) that pools produce orders for independent grocers and nonprofit food organizations from neighborhoods in the Tenderloin to Fillmore to Haight Ashbury. In turn, the respective stores will be able to lower their wholesale costs by approximately 10%, in exchange for capping their markup and lowering their prices by up to 25%.

How we Propose lowerING prices to make groceries more affordable in district 5

THE PROBLEM

Consolidation: leads to higher food prices and fewer choices

Cost: Food costs increased by 30% from 2020 to 2026

Barriers to Access: loss of anchor grocers and transportion convenient stores

THE SOLUTION

Group Purchasing Organization (GPO): 15%-30% GPO wholesale savings lead to lower costs for both grocers and non-profits resulting in more affordable and more nutritious food for the D5 community
