The Trump administration’s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission released its final strategy report, outlining recommended actions to address chronic disease impacting America’s youth.
We agree that chronic disease is a serious problem. But the report’s recommendations will not make Americans healthy; they will make us sicker, hungrier, and more at risk from unsafe food.
Our top takeaways from the report:
To fix the food system, the report focuses on voluntary industry actions and consumer education instead of holding the food industry accountable through regulation.
When the report does recommend policy change, many of those recommendations are undermined by the Trump administration’s actions, which are plunging the country into a nutrition security and food safety nightmare.
The remaining handful of policy recommendations not undermined by the Trump administration reflect Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s idiosyncratic beliefs, and are poised to cause serious harm.
For over half a century, CSPI has advocated for a safer, more equitable food system. We know that the fix for a broken food system is government action on evidence-based policies, not industry self-regulation. What we see this administration outline in the report is just the opposite.
It’s time to hold the administration accountable for living up to its promise to improve health.
Join CSPI on Tuesday, September 16th from 3 – 4pm ET for a webinar to debrief the MAHA Commission's recommended strategies, discuss the extent to which they align with scientific evidence, and explore implications for U.S. policy. Finally, we will offer resources, talking points, and model evidence-based policies to respond and take action as individuals, as organizations, and as a community of advocates.
We hope you can join us at the webinar!
